The Sonic Bacon Chili Cheese Coneys weren’t the reason I made the trip to Sonic today. It was because I had been seeing ads for a Sonic $5 Boom Box featuring a 6 inch hot dog, a Jr. Deluxe Cheeseburger, a tot and a drink for $5. The problem? These hadn’t yet made their way to my local Sonic Drive In! They did though, have 3 new dogs to choose from so… I sampled the dogs for you today.
These dogs are the ultimate combination of crispy bacon, chili and melty cheese. They are served as a regular Bacon Chili Cheese Coney with those previously said ingredients. There is a Spicy Bacon Chili Cheese Coney is made with 100 percent beef and topped with chili, shredded cheese, crisp bacon and a kick of spicy mustard and jalapenos. And lastly, the Loaded Bacon Ranch Chili Cheese Coney is made with 100 percent beef and topped with chili, shredded cheese, crisp bacon and zesty ranch.
Today I tried for you the Spicy Bacon Chili Cheese Coney and the Loaded Bacon Ranch Chili Cheese Coney. The positives of both hot dogs over either of the hot dogs I’ve got from Burger King (see here and here), is these were actually warm. Bacon is absolutely the star of the show on these. They contains big hunks of crispy bacon which is good, but almost overpowered some of the other flavors in the dog. To me there was a negative on each dog as well. The Spicy dog had pickled jalapenos. Pickling not only lowers the amount of heat in the jalapenos but to me also completely changes the flavor profile and not in a positive way. On the Loaded Bacon Ranch dog, I didn’t really feel like you could tell it was ranch on the dog. If you told me it was melted white cheese, I wouldn’t have argued. The zesty ranch taste just wasn’t there for me.
All in all, meal was hot.. weather was beautiful outside and it was very enjoyable afternoon to sit outside at a Sonic Drive In. These dogs are without a doubt one you need to eat with a fork so hopefully you dont mind that. If you love bacon though, these dogs are for you!
